Blue Mountains Camino Supporters

5-Day WALKS – the 5-Day Camino Training Walk

The Blue Mountains Camino Supporters is a social group which shares the wonderful spirit of the Camino through various events including its Blue Mountains 5-Day Camino Training Walk.

Over 5 days, pilgrims walk up from the base of the Blue Mountains – Penrith (Emu Plains), to Blackheath at the top of the Blue Mountains.

The 5-Day Camino Training Walk is a wonderful opportunity to experience the Camino spirit right here in Australia.   If you have walked a Camino and wish to rekindle the pleasures – and pain – of long distance walking with like-minded pilgrims, this walk is for you.   If you have never walked a Camino, but aspire to one day, this walk is the perfect opportunity to learn from others and experience a little of the ‘Camino’ spirit right here in Australia.

Please be aware this is not a guided walk, but rather a practice walk with a group of like-minded Camino pilgrims travelling up the Blue Mountains. You will be provided with a printed a walk guide, a planning guide and a route summary. Other supportive information is provided electronically, requiring a smartphone, tablet or computer. We recommend using a smartphone for the duration of the walk.

Route Info

On this uphill route you will walk on a variety of terrain – fire roads, bush tracks, pathways, pavement (including a section along the Great Western Highway), suburban roads.  There are steps and some steep sections.  There will be options to deviate from the standard route to include scenic tracks or points of particular interest.

Emu Plains, our starting point, is 27m above sea level, and Blackheath, our end point, is at 1065m. Each day distances walked are between 14km and 23km.  Although the distances don’t appear long, each day will take approx 6-8 hrs, including breaks, due to the elevation gain and variable bush tracks.

A total distance of around 95km, starting at Emu Plains on Tuesday morning and arriving in Blackheath on Saturday around midday.

5-Day Walk albergue (the event centre)

When the 5-Day is a Blackheath based 5-Day Walk, there are various accommodation options in the village and a limited number of places available for pilgrims at Glenella in Blackheath. Glenella is a guesthouse facility temporarily converted into an ‘albergue’ and event centre for the week. It is not required to stay here, however, since Pilgrims may also choose to join the 5-Day Walk and stay along the way at the various villages as they walk up the Mountains.

During the week there are evening activities held at the ‘albergue’ in Blackheath and we encourage everyone to attend as many of these as possible. By choosing to stay at the temporary ‘Glenella albergue’ you are easily able to attend all of these and to be a part of all the other ad-hoc social happenings that spring up. Having many people staying together or close by in Blackheath allows a ‘Camino family’ experience – one where pilgrims walk and talk with different people daily. This somewhat mimics a Camino experience you would have in Spain staying in the Albergues each night.

Other Accommodation Options

If you do not stay in the ‘albergue’, there are many other accommodation options in most of the villages along the way. These you may independently arrange for yourself and others who you know of and are walking the 5-Day. There will be more information provided on Walk registration.
