The Camino Podiensis is the most popular pilgrimage route in France, with the stretch from Le Puy to Conques being especially favoured. Our journey began with the 7 a.m. blessing Mass at Le Puy Cathedral, an impressive church perched on a rocky peak. At the conclusion of the service, a gate in the floor opens, signaling the start of the Camino. The Podiensis is a hilly and challenging path, more demanding than the Camino Frances, as it follows the GR trail. Marked with white and red waymarker signs, this route offers numerous highlights, including charming villages, historic towns, and flavourful cuisine, particularly suited for meat lovers. The gîtes along the way are typically small and cosy, with rooms that often have only a few beds. Be sure to call the gîte the evening prior to secure dinner and breakfast arrangements, especially if you have special dietary needs. The journey concludes at Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port.
