Our Weekend in Canberra

Posted on October 16, 2026October 16, 2026 by S

We have just had a fantastic weekend in Canberra. Thank you to all those that joined us – some from as far away as Harvey Bay and Melbourne. On the Friday night, 52 of us gathered for dinner at the Hellenic Club. This was a great start to the weekend, a chance to welcome new people to the group, catch up with the Canberra crew and enjoy the oasis that is the Hellenic Club. We highly recommend checking it out if in Canberra.

On the Saturday morning, 50 of us gathered at the front of the National Gallery. Two medium groups headed off for a walk taking in the various European embassies, Old and New Parliament House and the lake. The easy group visited Old and New Parliament House. We enjoyed the lovely gardens next to Old Parliament House, saw a few embassies and enjoyed a pit stop at the Canberra yacht club before making our way back via the lake. A big thank you to Joe from Canberra who jumped in to lead the easy walk.

After the walk, people enjoyed Floriade, the NGA, the Portrait Gallery and the Antarctic Exhibition at the Australian Museum, before gathering at the Spanish Club. Staff prepared a great paella feast for us and made us feel very welcome!

On Sunday morning, 23 walkers met at the National Arboretum – a fantastic place to visit. We split into two groups and enjoyed the various groves of trees including the Portuguese Cork Oak forest and the very special Himalayan Cedar Forest. It was also the annual kite day which was a joy to see. Special thanks to Doug and Ann from Canberra who led the groups.

BMCS Admin would like to say a special thanks to Mary from Canberra who worked hard to make this such a fantastic weekend for everyone – thank you Mary we really appreciate your support. Mary was not able to walk with us due to injury, but we are grateful to Joe, Doug and Ann who stepped in and helped lead walks on the Saturday and Sunday.

Thank you again to everyone who joined us. It was a fantastic weekend filled to the brim with Camino spirit!
